Interior Spring Spruce Up

I know, I know, Winter has only just arrived, it feels like Christmas was a week ago and Santa probably hasn’t even made it back to the North Pole yet. Storm Ciara and Dennis aside, I have been finding the weather fairly mild as of late. As a hardcore Winter enthusiast it pains me to say it, but I am already thinking about a Spring spruce up for my interior.

I decorate seasonally – it has become a bit of a thing. Transitioning my home decor through the seasons stops it from feeling too stagnant, and I fall in love with a space over and over again.

Spring is all about colour, fresh air and rebirth, and with these five simple tips you can inject a little bit of it into your home with minimal effort and expense.

Colour Pop

Contrary to my Instagram feed, I’m not averse to some colour pops, in fact I find them thrilling. Yeah, this is how I get my kicks nowadays. Colour pops can take any shape or form; think cushions on the sofa, vases and shelf ornaments, or boldly painted on the walls. Colour POP implies a minimal amount of colour for maximum effect. I tend to decorate and accessorize a room with the rule of three; one big item of furniture, and two different items of colour pop should do the trick (wall art / cushions / count as one, no matter the multiples).

My bedroom has purposely been kept white and neutral to encourage calm and relaxation. I couldn’t resist the colour pop of the royal blue chair, however!

Furniture Rethink

Does anyone else remember rearranging their bedroom furniture as a kid? I always felt like I was walking into a newly furnished room for the next few days after a layout do-over, and the same applies for me now. If I’m finding a room boring or when my Christmas tree is too big to keep it as is (size matters, okay) I’ll indulge in a little redesign. The simplest moves are usually the most effective – a little angle change on the sofa here or a coffee table move there works wonders on your space. And its free! Winning.

Upcycle

If your Pinterest page looks anything like mine, you’ll understand when I say you can upcycle just about anything in your home with very little expense and effort on your part. This varies with just how creatively inclined you are, or if you prefer to leave the building to Bob. Give a chest of drawers a new lease of life with a lick of paint and some new handles, or turn vintage suitcases into a unique coffee table.

Feature Wall

If you feel the need to dramatically change up a space, wallpaper can be your best friend. 2020 is going to see our love of all things scandi and botanical reach our walls. If you aren’t brave enough to go full hog, then consider a feature wall. Every space will have one – or more – walls that are patiently waiting for a little treatment. If bold patterns scare you away, then start neutral (think an earthly tone like Taupe) with a subtle pattern. It will create a feature, but lay the groundwork for you to inject your colour pops with soft furnishings or accents.

My daughter loves woodland animals, so I wallpapered half of her bedroom wall in themed paper – contrasting with the remaining white walls

Go Small

Small, yet mighty. Believe it or not, small and subtle changes can have the biggest impact on a space. One of the most effective ways to update a room is to replace the handles on a chest of drawers, wardrobe, set of kitchen cabinets or interior door handles. Shop around and experiment with what is right for the style you want to achieve. If you are creatively inclined look beyond the store stock of handles and transform almost anything into a pull – brooches and ribbons are a personal favourite.

I hope I’ve inspired you to pull your Spring socks up and get a start on sprucing up your space.

Bye for now,

Kelly
